Advanced Family Eye Care was started by the late Dr. R Doran Espe in 1979 in Independence, IA. He provided medical eye care for the town of Independence for many years and is still loved by patients today. In 2009, after Dr. Espe’s death, Dr. Carrie Kearns took over as owner of AFEC. She continued the culture and legacy that Dr. Espe created. During her ownership she created the Vision 360 brand and introduced vision therapy to the practice.
In 2019 Dr. Kearns sold the practice to Dr. Brad Boyle who currently owns the practice. Dr. Boyle strives to continue the medical eye care put in place by Dr. Kearns and Dr. Espe. AFEC expanded to Waterloo, Iowa in 2020 providing full scope optometry. The practice continues to look for growth opportunities throughout the area. The major focus of Dr. Boyle is to provide patients with medical eye care and to provide team members with a better and more rewarding work life.
Dr Carrie Kearns, OD has been serving Independence and the Cedar Valley with eye care since 2007. She specializes in ocular disease with a special focus in pediatric vision therapy. She received her Doctor of Optometry Degree from Indiana University School of Optometry. She co-authored “Two differing presentations, treatments, and outcomes of malignant choroidal melanoma” and is an active member of the COVD, American Optometric Association, and Iowa Optometric Association, and InfantSEE.
