How often do I need an eye exam?

Annual eye exams are recommended. As a part of each patient’s primary healthcare team it is important to maintain regular visits to monitor for any abnormalities in the eyes and evaluate anything the eyes are able to tell us about overall wellness. Early detection of threatening diseases adds time for treatment and increases the potential for positive outcomes.

What does my eye exam include?

A comprehensive eye exam includes:

  • Patient and family health history.
  • Visual acuity measurement.
  • Preliminary tests of visual function and eye health, including depth perception, color vision, peripheral (side) vision and the response of the pupils to light.
  • Assessment of refractive status to determine the presence of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
  • Evaluation of eye focusing, eye teaming and eye movement abilities.
  • Eye health examination.
  • Additional tests as needed

Advanced Family Eye Care emphasizes patient education and investment in personal health. The terminology, testing, and results will be explained throughout the exam.

Will my pupils be dilated?

Usually not – The advancement of diagnostic tools has provided optometrists with opportunities to take a closer look at eyes without dilation. However, there are times when dilation is the best course of action, so it is always a possibility. Dilation can cause short-term inconveniences but provides long-term safety and peace of mind.
